Romer’s Plan Calls for Math, Reading Coaches
Los Angeles schools Supt. Roy Romer has unveiled a five-year strategic plan that calls for the district to concentrate its resources on improved reading and math skills, professional development and adequate classroom space.
The plan emphasizes the use of teacher coaches in literacy and math. It calls for 780 coaches in all, 475 for reading and 285 for math.
“The well-prepared teacher is key to student learning,†Romer said in notes incorporated into the plan. “Therefore, an intensely focused professional development component is key to this plan.â€
Under the plan, explicit reading instruction will be included in all content areas at all grade levels.
