Stiles Becomes NCAA’s Career Scoring Leader

Jackie Stiles of No. 18-ranked Southwest Missouri State scored 30 points and became the career scoring leader in NCAA Division I women’s basketball in a 94-59 victory over Creighton at Springfield, Mo. Stiles increased her career total to 3,133, breaking the record of 3,122 that Patricia Hoskins set at Mississippi Valley State from 1985-89. The record fell when Stiles made a three-point shot early in the second half, giving her 3,123. Stiles, who also leads the nation in scoring this season at 30.8 points a game, is still not the all-time collegiate leader. Five players scored more than Stiles in the years before women’s basketball came under the NCAA in 1982. Lynette Woodard was the leader in that era with 3,649 points at Kansas from 1977-81. Southwest Missouri State is 21-5 overall and 15-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference; Creighton is 17-9 and 11-6. . . . Loyola Marymount (20-8) got 16 points each from Bryn Britton and Adrienne Slaughter in a 63-53 victory over San Diego (10-12) in the first round of the West Coast Conference Tournament at San Diego. It was the first time Loyola Marymount has won in the tournament. . . . Alica Hernandez scored 26 points to lead San Francisco (13-15) to a 78-73 victory over Pepperdine (20-10). Nadja Morgan had 19 points for Pepperdine, which had not lost in the first round of the tournament since 1995. . . . Ebony Hoffman had 21 points, including a layup with 12 seconds remaining, as USC (10-15, 5-10 in the Pacific 10) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half for a 62-59 victory at Stanford (15-10, 9-6). Stanford missed three shots in the closing seconds. Hoffman also had 13 rebounds while teammate Tiffany Elmore had 12 of her 14 points in the second half. . . . Kenya Corley scored a game-high 22 points as California (12-13, 8-7) completed its first series sweep of UCLA (4-25, 3-12) and had a season-high point total in an an 83-59 victory at Berkeley. . . . UC Irvine took a 20-point halftime lead and rolled to a 70-43 victory over visiting Idaho. Cindy Oparah had 14 points and 10 rebounds for UCI (15-13, 6-7), which outrebounded Idaho (6-20, 3-10), 54-37. . . . Crista Peterson scored 21 points as visiting Boise State (11-15, 7-6) defeated Cal State Fullerton, 78-63. Nikki Lee scored 12 points for Fullerton (1-25, 1-12).
