Police Accountability
I read with amazement the apparent lack of accountability LAPD officers Victor and Geno Colello were accorded following the investigation of the swapping of motorbike parts from an LAPD motorcycle to the elder Colello’s “movie bike†(“Officer Spoke of Suicide Before Killing,†June 25). Failure of the district attorney’s office to file charges, leaving the department to handle the incident, as well as a Board of Rights panel clearing Geno Colello of any wrongdoing, clearly sends a message that the LAPD protects its own.
With this message in mind, is it any wonder that officers, hopefully very few in number, who put their interests and impulses over the public good will feel immune to the consequences should their actions be brought to light?
