Seven North Koreans who took refuge in a U.N. office in Beijing seeking asylum in South Korea left China today for an unidentified third country, a U.N. official said.

The seven family members--a couple, two grandparents and three children--had holed themselves up for four days in the Beijing office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR, saying they faced persecution in their homeland.

China has forcibly returned North Koreans under similar circumstances. It agreed to let the family leave for unspecified health reasons, a UNHCR official said.
