Reduce Immigration

Re “Border Pact to Target Safety,� June 23: The people of the U.S. do not have any “shared responsibility� to make it easier for illegal immigrants to enter our country, as Jorge Castaneda suggests. Rather, we should make it a priority to reduce legal immigration to environmentally sustainable levels, which would be well below the 1-million-plus we currently allow to enter every year, and deport anyone who is here illegally. Granting amnesty, in-state tuition or driver’s licenses to these people not only rewards them for breaking our laws but encourages others to do the same.
