Mindful Conservation

So the gentleman who wrote in the other day plans to run his air conditioner full bore and otherwise stop conserving power because new rules would give rate reductions only to those who start conserving now (letter, June 24). He seems to think there is no incentive for him to conserve. I’ll give him two good reasons anyway: One, if he doesn’t continue to conserve, his power bill will be a lot higher, discounted rates or not. Two, it’s the civic-minded, sorely needed, unselfish thing to do, and that’s worth a lot if you can find the right mental attitude.
