Champions Meet Begins Today in Mission Viejo
As many as 50 world-class swimmers, including former and future Olympians, are expected to begin competition today at the Tyr Swim Meet of Champions in Mission Viejo. The annual event, hosted by the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Club, continues through Sunday at the Marguerite Recreation Center.
Among the largest groups expected to compete are 17 members of the 2000 Canadian Olympic team who will be using the meet to post qualifying times for Canada’s national trials this summer. Mexico is sending six members of its national team, while members of New Zealand’s top club championship team are also expected.
The Philippines’ and Czech Republic’s 2000 Olympic teams will also be represented.
Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Benko leads a large American contingent. Others expected to compete include silver medalists Aaron Peirsol, Chad Carvin, Scott Tucker, Klete Keller, Jason Lezak, Erik Vendt and bronze medalist Kaitlin Sandeno.
Prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m. today through Saturday and at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday.
