Paid attendance for the four-day Valley Fair that ended Sunday climbed to 13,000 this year from 9,800 last year, organizers said Monday.

The fair’s board of directors had hired a management team that runs the profitable Antelope Valley Fair after a poorly publicized move last year from Burbank to the Hansen Dam Recreation Area in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

Paid attendance fell by a third last year and the state-funded event lost $188,000.

The new management team of Dan Jacobs and Randy Jaqua hired Tex-Mex rocker Freddy Fender and added rides that could be seen from the Foothill Freeway.
