Rangers Draft OCC’s Beerer

Scott Beerer, a right-handed pitcher from Orange Coast College, was the first of 24 Orange County players picked Wednesday on the second day of baseball’s amateur draft.

Beerer, who played at Newport Harbor High, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 23rd round.

Two Capistrano Valley High players, pitcher Derek Acosta and outfielder Travis Becktel, were taken in the 41st round by Tampa Bay and Montreal, respectively.

The draft resumes today with the 51st round.

Former Calvary Chapel assistant baseball coach Paul Woo has been hired to replace interim Coach Dan Naulty, Eagle Athletic Director Mike Rausch said.

Woo, who coached for five years under former Coach Joe Walters, took this season off from baseball to coach the girls’ volleyball team. He will continue to coach volleyball while he coaches baseball.

Naulty, a midseason replacement for Mike Williams, will remain with the team as pitching coach. The Eagles went 19-11 this year under Williams and Naulty.

SOCCER

Tyler Theslof scored the winning goal with five minutes to play Wednesday as the Orange County Blue Star defeated the Southern California Seahorses, 3-2, in a Premier Development League game at Fullerton High.

Eric Mantrastelli scored the tying goal earlier in the second half for the Blue Star (7-3), which got a first-half goal from Victor Guerrero. Jose Retiz and Ryan Coiner scored for the Seahorses (3-5-1), who took a 2-1 lead on Coiner’s goal early in the second half.

WRESTLING

Frank Pinto has resigned as Santa Ana Valley’s wrestling coach to take the same position at Bellflower High. Pinto led the Falcons to the Southern Section playoffs last season.

TRACK AND FIELD

UC Irvine freshmen Jenny Liou and Eddie Guerrero have qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships June 16-17 in Richmond, Va.

Liou attained qualifying times in two events, the 800 meters (2 minutes 12.73 seconds) and 1,500 meters (4:33.42). Guerrero has qualified in the 1,500 meters with his time of 3:54.71 that he ran May 12 at the Occidental Invitational.

HANDBALL

The U.S. Handball Assn. will hold its 51st National Four-Wall Championships June 16-23 at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

More than 700 players, ranging in age from 9 to 90, are expected to compete. The professionals will play for $40,000 in prize money.

Among the competitors expected is Ireland’s Lydia Doolan, the current world champion in the girls’ 17-and-under division.
