Terrell Finally Agrees to Terms
David Terrell agreed to a five-year contract with the Chicago Bears Sunday, ending a holdout that kept the first-round draft choice from the first nine days of practice.
Terrell, a wide receiver from Michigan and the eighth player chosen in April’s draft, had been the Bears’ only unsigned draft choice.
He is expected to join practice today. The team had a day off Sunday.
Terrell is highest-drafted receiver the Bears have had since Curtis Conway was the seventh pick in 1993.
He is a welcome addition to an ailing receiving corps. Among the injured is Marcus Robinson, whose back injury will sideline him four to eight weeks.
Terrell, a big, strong receiver with speed, left Michigan after his junior year. He was the first player in school history with two seasons of 1,000 yards receiving.
Despite playing all last season with a stress fracture in his right foot, he caught 67 passes for a school-record 1,130 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Coach Dick Jauron plans to use Terrell at flanker, where he will compete with Bobby Engram for a starting job. Engram, the Bears’ leading receiver in 1998-99, was sidelined most of last season with a knee injury.
