Experimental Plane Crashes, Killing 2
An experimental plane crashed near Palm Springs International Airport, killing its two occupants, officials said Saturday.
The Air Force alerted Civil Air Patrol officials late Friday that the home-built Rutan VariEze had disappeared from its radar on approach to the airport. The plane had taken off from Chino.
The wreckage was found Saturday in percolation ponds at the north end of Palm Springs.
The plane’s two occupants were killed on impact, officials said. They were not immediately identified.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash, an operations officer in the agency’s Lawndale office said.
