Closing Prison Could Cost $800 Million
Replacing 149-year-old San Quentin prison and moving staff and inmates would cost about $800 million--but more than half of that could be recovered by selling the Marin County site.
Last fall, state officials asked the Department of General Services to examine options for closing the prison. The report Tuesday said the property could bring between $129 million and $664 million, depending on what development is allowed.
The report recommends that Marin County officials prepare a land use plan and environmental impact report, and that state officials review possible replacement sites. Those steps could take two to three years.
