Broadcom Cuts Staff as Revenue Falls Off

Broadcom Corp. has terminated an undisclosed number of employees, following through on previously announced plans to cut jobs at its Irvine headquarters and elsewhere.

The high-speed-communications chip maker, facing declining sales, said early last month that it would reduce staff and cut other costs during the second quarter ended June 30. Job cuts, which included engineers, have impacted units throughout the company.

“The numbers represent a small percentage of the company’s work force worldwide,†said Broadcom spokesman Bill Blanning, who declined to rule out further cuts. Broadcom had 2,706 employees at the end of March, including 945 in Orange County.

In early June the firm said it expected second-quarter revenue to fall 32% to 35% below first-quarter revenue of $318.1 million, which also was below earlier estimates.
