Disneyland Yanks Toy Rifles After Accident
Disneyland has removed the toy rifles from Tom Sawyer Island after an accident in which a 6-year-old girl lost a finger.
Today the park will reopen the play fort where the rifles were located.
Park officials decided to remove the mock frontier rifles in Fort Wilderness “until we understand the issues related to the accident,†park spokesman Ray Gomez said Tuesday.
On Jan. 21, Priscilla Figueroa of North Hollywood was playing with one of the toy guns when she slipped and caught her left index finger on something, according to police reports. She lost two-thirds of her finger.
Although the paramedics report indicates that her finger was stuck in the trigger, it remains unclear exactly how the accident happened. A police report indicated that the girl might have been wearing a ring.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has said it will investigate but has not yet contacted Disneyland for a statement. As a courtesy, Gomez said park officials alerted the commission that they had removed the rifles and planned to reopen the fort today.
