Workers Pay $1 at Day Laborer Site

The city’s Cross Cultural Task Force has begun charging laborers at Laguna Canyon Road’s hiring site $1 per day to help defray the expenses of operating the center.
The Day Laborer Area is primarily filled with those willing to perform $8- to $10-an-hour jobs, such as painting, gardening or moving, officials say. The task force, which operates the center, will only charge workers who get jobs.
Additionally, the task force, a nonprofit organization created more than 10 years ago to ease relations between Latinos and whites, is charging contractors who use the site’s laborers $5 daily.
The group, with aid from the Laguna Beach Police Department, started the Day Laborer Area a year ago. With grants and donations, the task force built a small trailer and staffed it with two bilingual workers.
