City to Seek Funds for Homeowners

The City Council voted Tuesday to approve an application for $400,000 in grant money from the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The money would fund the city’s first-time home buyer and rehabilitation programs, aimed at helping current and prospective homeowners.

The state allows each qualified household to receive up to $20,000 toward buying a home and making repairs.

If the state approves the city’s application, a total of $400,000 will be available for 2001 to very-low and low-income homeowners and prospective home buyers.

“We benefit by having more homeowners,” said Susan Emery, redevelopment manager for the city’s Community Development Department. “Most of our housing stock is 40 to 50 years old and a lot of it is in need of repairs.”

The state’s Housing and Community Development Department announced in November that $34 million is available for public and nonprofit agencies through the CalHome Program.

City officials expect to receive a response a few months after the application deadline, Feb. 8.
