On the day Disneyland opened, July 17, 1955, the Los Angeles Times wrote: “Undoubtedly destined to become one of Southern California’s greatest attractions, Disneyland is also a prime proof that dreams do not come true all by themselves. For into this spectacular project has gone meticulous planning almost awesome in its details.”
This month, more dreams with meticulous planning come true courtesy of the folks at Disney, on what just a few years ago was Disneyland’s main parking lot:
Disney’s California Adventure (Disneyland pass-holders and others are previewing it this month; grand opening is Feb. 8). A second theme park with new rides, restaurants and shops tied to a California theme. A separate admission charge (the same price as Disneyland’s); packages will be available.
Downtown Disney (opens Friday). A public plaza with shopping, dining and entertainment adjacent to Disneyland. No admission charge for entering this area.
The Grand Californian Hotel (opened Jan. 2). Disney’s third hotel in Anaheim and its first resort hotel inside a theme park.
In this special issue of Calendar Weekend, take a tour of these new attractions.
