University Takes Down Grant in Quarterfinals, 2-1
Ricardo Perez of Grant High scored on a penalty kick in the 35th minute to the tie the score, but University defeated the Lancers, 2-1, in a City Section quarterfinal boys’ soccer game Tuesday at Grant.
Grant (14-4-3), the Sunset League champion, was reinstated in the playoffs after South Gate, which beat Grant in a second-round match last Wednesday, was disqualified for using an ineligible player.
Mark Iraheta made seven saves for Grant.
Diamond Ranch 2, La Canada 0--The Rio Hondo League champion Spartans (22-1-1) had an 18-game winning streak snapped in a Southern Section Division IV semifinal at La Canada.
Scott Inglish and Marco Rodriguez scored for Diamond bar (24-6-1), which was outshot, 22-10.
Chris Garnic and Mike Kotick combined to make three saves for La Canada (22-1-1), which had outscored its opponents, 99-9, this season.
The Spartans have won 12 of 14 league titles.
