8 Killed in Ethnic Clashes on Borneo

Clashes between rival ethnic groups in the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo left at least eight people dead and two others injured, police said.

Fighting broke out between indigenous Dayak people and migrants from other parts of Indonesia in the southern town of Sampit, about 450 miles northeast of Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, said police officer Sgt. Ade.

He said that mobs had torched three houses and that police officers were searching for more victims in the ruins.

Ade, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, said the area remained tense even after dozens of police officers were deployed. He said it was unclear what triggered the fighting.
