Calvary Chapel Is Top-Seeded in Section Duals
The Southern Section dual meet wrestling championships begin Saturday, with Orange County teams competing in Divisions I through IV.
Calvary Chapel is top-seeded and the defending champion in Division I. Host Temecula Valley is seeded second and is ranked second behind the Eagles in the Division I poll.
Calvary Chapel is ranked No. 1 in the state; its only dual meet loss this season was to Bakersfield, which is ranked second in the state. The Eagles, led by Anthony Rodriquez (112 pounds), Steve Esparza (130), Frank Gill (135), Willie Parks (171) and Conan Williams (189), will face Temescal Canyon in the first round.
Also competing in Division I are El Modena, seeded third, Magnolia, Santa Ana Valley and Valencia. Villa Park, the Century League champion, opted not to compete in the tournament.
Santa Ana is seeded second behind host Chino Hills Ayala in Division II. Ozzie Avalos (160) and Juan Silva (125) will lead Santa Ana, which opens against Riverside Norte Vista. Other county schools competing are Laguna Hills, San Clemente, Dana Hills and Saddleback. Laguna Hills faces San Clemente in the first round.
Empire League champion El Dorado, ranked third in the county, has a first-round bye and is seeded second in Division III, which also includes Marina and Los Alamitos. Top-seeded Corona Centennial hosts the meet.
Los Amigos, representing the Garden Grove League, and Pacific Coast League champion University compete in the Division IV meet at Workman High in Industry.
Freeway League champion Troy will wrestle South Pasadena the first round in Division V, hosted by top-seeded Yucca Valley.
All meets start at 11 a.m.
