New Year’s Day Closings

* Mail: All post offices will be closed and no mail will be delivered Tuesday.

* Banks: Some banks will have shorter hours today. All banks are closed Tuesday.

* Courts: All courts will be closed Tuesday.

* Schools: Los Angeles Unified schools reopen Wednesday or Jan. 7, depending on the track. Most other public schools in Los Angeles County reopen Jan. 7.

* Libraries: City and county libraries will be closed Tuesday. Some libraries are closed or have shorter hours today.

* Government: All federal, state, county and municipal offices--except those providing emergency services--will be closed Tuesday. Most city and county offices are open regular hours today.

* Transportation: The MTA is offering free rides on buses from 9 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Tuesday, and on the rail system from 9 p.m. today to closing (generally at midnight). MTA rail service and buses will follow Sunday schedules on Tuesday. Metrolink trains will not operate Tuesday.

* Trash: There will be no trash pickup in the city of Los Angeles on Tuesday. If your trash is normally picked up Tuesdays through Fridays, pickup will be postponed one day.
