Mudslides Kill 30; Hundreds Left Homeless

Mudslides caused by torrential rains killed at least 30 people in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, most of them buried under homes in a hillside shantytown, officials said. At least 68 people were missing.
In Petropolis, 40 miles north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, 20 people were killed and at least 600 were left homeless, state civil defense officer Kleber Santos Silva said. A state of emergency was declared, and the main road to Rio was closed.
Ten people were buried by mudslides or houses that collapsed elsewhere, authorities said.
