Two students were killed and two were injured when their speeding Honda Prelude careened into a parked car and then flipped over on a Northridge street, Los Angeles police said Monday.
Kay Lee, 19, of Chatsworth, and Huu Doung, 19, of Winnetka, were pronounced dead at Northridge Hospital Medical Center a short time after the accident, which was reported at 7:50 p.m. Sunday in the 9700 block of Wilbur Avenue, said Sgt. John Pasquariello, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman.
Authorities said Lee and Doung were riding in the right front and rear passenger seats, but did not specify who was in which seat. They died of massive head injuries after being thrown from the car, authorities said.
The driver, Philip Ahn, 19, of Granada Hills, and a third passenger, whose name and information were not released, were flown by helicopter to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center with serious injuries.
Pasquariello said there were signs that Ahn may have been driving under the influence. If he was, Ahn could face charges ranging from reckless driving to murder, Pasquariello said.
LAPD Valley traffic detectives said witnesses told them Ahn was weaving in and out of traffic as he sped south along Wilbur Avenue, less than a quarter-mile from the Northridge Fashion Center. The car then slid sideways, slammed into the parked car and flipped over, investigators said.
