Travis Reed has recorded three consecutive double-doubles for Long Beach State, which is looking to make a major statement against two Pacific 10 opponents this week.
Reed, a senior forward who transferred to Long Beach from UCLA after the 1998-99 season, leads the 49ers against USC at the Pyramid on Wednesday and at No. 13 Stanford on Saturday.
The 6-foot-8, 250-pound Reed had 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 93-83 loss to Pepperdine on Tuesday. He is averaging 11.6 points and 8.7 rebounds.
Long Beach (3-4) is 5-5 against USC, having lost last season at the Sports Arena, 95-73. But the 49ers have defeated the Trojans the last three times they have played in Long Beach, including a 76-66 victory in 1999-2000.
Long Beach lost to Stanford last season at the Pyramid, 86-63..
The 49ers have lost seven consecutive games against nationally ranked opponents. Their last victory over a ranked team was on Feb. 24, 1994, when they defeated No. 25 New Mexico State, 84-83.
Long Beach has signed two men’s basketball players to national letters of intent.
Antoine Jackson, a 6-8 forward, averaged nine points and seven rebounds last season at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.
Lezcano Dean, a 6-4 forward, averaged 16 points and five rebounds last season for Charleston High in Charleston, Mo.
Vance Redfern, an associate athletic director at San Diego State, has been added to the list of finalists to become athletic director at Cal State Fullerton. He is scheduled to interview at the school on Wednesday.
Redfern, a former assistant athletic director at Fullerton, will be the final candidate to interview for the position.
The other finalists are Dr. Terry Wanless, former athletic director at North Dakota, Western Carolina and Towson State; Brian Quinn, former athletic director at Loyola Marymount; Ron Prettyman, athletic director at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Dr. Maryalyce Jeremiah, senior associate athletic director at Fullerton.
