Tax Rebate Stimulates Endless Debate
In regard to Leonard Penzo’s complaint on tax whiners, as he calls them (letter, Aug. 9): Maybe he too will be whining if he has to pay back the alleged rebate.
Congress and President Bush have simply put together a plan to advance us on next year’s tax refund. Therefore, if you are entitled to a refund, plan on subtracting your check from that; if you owe, then apply that check amount to the total owed. You might just want to hang onto it till next year, rather than stimulate the economy--as if that piddling amount could actually stimulate this unsound economy.

I don’t understand why so many citizens would hesitate to spend their tax rebate check. I am going to spend all of it and then some on Sept. 15, when the next installment of my estimated taxes is due! Thanks, G.W.--I think.
