From Times Wire Reports

The superintendent of Kansas City schools resigned--just days after he was fired and then rehired in his job by a federal judge last week.

Benjamin Demps Jr., with tears in his eyes, said the Missouri Legislature should take over the embattled district, calling it “truly the district’s last chance.â€

The district, which includes some 32,000 students, lost accreditation in 1999 for failing to meet any of the state’s 11 educational criteria. Failure to show adequate improvement by the end of June 2002 would mean a state takeover.
