The Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday put left-handed pitcher Brian Anderson on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained lower back.

The move is retroactive to April 12. Anderson, who turns 29 on Thursday, was scratched from a scheduled start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies because of the injury. He is 0-2 with a 14.14 earned-run average in two starts.

Anderson started 32 games for the Diamondbacks last season and was 11-7 with a 4.05 ERA.

The Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Bret Prinz from triple-A Tucson to replace Anderson.

The Texas Rangers activated center fielder Gabe Kapler from the disabled list and he was in the starting lineup against the Oakland Athletics.

Kapler tore his right quadriceps muscle March 22 while running the bases during a spring training game. He also sat out a month early last season because of a tear in the same muscle.

To make room for Kapler, the Rangers designated right-handed pitcher Jonathan Johnson (0-0, 9.58 ERA in five relief appearances) for assignment.

The Cleveland Indians called up left-handed reliever Rich Rodriguez from double-A Akron.

Rodriguez, 38, was signed to a minor league contract by the Indians on April 8 after being released by the New York Mets during spring training. The El Monte Mountain View High graduate pitched in four games for Akron and did not give up a run in five innings.

The Indians optioned right-hander Jake Westbrook to triple-A Buffalo and designated left-hander Roy Padilla for assignment.
