June L. Maland, a lifelong Santa Paula resident, died Monday at a convalescent home in Santa Paula. She was 78.

She was born June 3, 1922, in Santa Paula, where she grew up and went to school.

While attending Santa Paula High School, she met her future husband, Les Maland, who had recently moved to the city. The couple married in 1943. He would later serve for two decades as a Santa Paula councilman and mayor.

She was a longtime member of the Church of Christ Scientist in Santa Paula and was a reader and practitioner for the church. She was also an active member of the state Democratic Central Committee and was dedicated to politics and campaigning.

Maland, a longtime member of the Humane Society, was known for her love and compassion for animals.

She traveled extensively, visiting dozens of countries.

Maland was preceded in death by her husband and her son David in 1998.

She is survived by another son, J.A. “Jake†Maland of Santa Paula, and two granddaughters.

A memorial service is scheduled at 3 p.m. Friday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura, which is handling the arrangements.
