No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

As Mary McNamara says (“When Searching for Common Ground, Parking’s Just the Ticket,” March 28), everyone has a parking ticket story. In 1989, between terms as city clerk and treasurer of Monrovia, I was asked to “fill in” for a month at the Police Department.
My first day out I parked in the Police Department’s parking lot and was rewarded with a ticket at the end of the day because one needs a permit to park there. No one had bothered to mention that, and there were no signs. When I mentioned to the chief that it would be a good idea to post signs, he agreed because he too had gotten a ticket. Signs have been posted since then.
