Holocaust Program to Include Gift of Ever-Burning Lamp
“Lest We Forget” will be the theme of the Holocaust Memorial this week at Temple Isaiah of Newport Beach. Special prayers will be said to remember those lost in the Holocaust. The evening will also include an Eternal Light presentation. The Harbor Christian Church, which has shared its facilities with Temple Isaiah for 25 years, will place a gift of an ever-burning lamp over the Holy Ark. The lamp features six colored-glass panels that represent the 6 million Jews killed and 12 smaller panels that represent the 12 tribes of Israel. The service is at 8 p.m. Friday. Holocaust survivor Ela Stein Weissberger will sing selections from the children’s opera “Brunidbar” during “An Evening of Holocaust Remembrance: The Children of Terezin” at 7 p.m. Monday in Chapman University’s Memorial Hall. Following a candle-lighting ceremony and reflections by Rabbi Shelton Donnell of Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Ana, there will be a poetry reading featuring the works of children who were in the Nazi concentration camp Terezin. A Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial) observance will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Judea of Laguna Woods. Among participants will be Cantors Seldon Marshall and Isaac Attias, Shoa Survivors President Mary Kress and 50 Holocaust survivors. A candle-lighting ceremony will be included. Louis Posner, author of “Through a Boy’s Eyes,” will speak about surviving the Holocaust as a black marketeer, Auschwitz inmate and fugitive from the Gestapo, during Yom Hashoah services at the University Synagogue in Irvine. Findings from a national survey on religion, politics and civic involvement in the U.S. Latino community will be presented at a half-day conference May 4 at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. The study by the Hispanic Churches in American Public Life is part of a three-year program funded by a $1.3-million grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts. A musical drama, “Saturday’s Warrior,” will be presented April 26-28 at the Huntington Beach North Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Also at Trinity, three classes will soon get underway and are open to the public. “Dating in the Teen Years” will be taught April 22 from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. by Candi Dabney, a licensed marriage family therapist. On April 29 from 6 to 9 p.m., Bill Ditewig and Kathy Sizer will present a seminar on “Detecting Hidden Enemies to Your Marriage Commitment.” And “A Tour of Narnia with C.S. Lewis” will be taught by James Prothero, a doctoral candidate at the University of Wales. The class takes place on four consecutive Mondays, beginning April 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost for the C.S.
