Heavy Rain Causes Nearly 400 Crashes

An unusually heavy April shower caused hundreds of accidents on Orange County roads Saturday. The California Highway Patrol responded to 385 crashes between midnight and late afternoon Saturday.
Typical Saturdays have about half that number, said Susan Simmons, a CHP communications supervisor.
Most of the accidents were fender benders and no fatalities were reported, she said.
A fast-moving cold front from Alaska brought the chill and rain, and most Orange County cities received an early morning soaking. About half an inch fell in both Santa Ana and Newport Beach; Huntington Beach received a quarter of an inch.
Twelve to 14 inches of snow dropped on Mt. Baldy, and windy, wintry conditions were reported through the high desert. Gravel-size hail fell on some Southern California neighborhoods.
