I agree with Wendy Hughes (Letters, April 1). Maratta’s “Silent Pictures� is not even worthy of the “cartoon� label-there’s no humor depicted in each week’s drawing or words, and it sometimes contains errors. For example, on April 1 she used Daylight “Savings� instead of “Saving.�

I don’t exactly agree with Hughes’ view that a cartoon depicting a producer inviting a writer to a premiere to sweep the floors is not funny. But I can say it is impossible.

To the teacher who feels there are no recent motion pictures appropriate to show in his classroom (Letters, March 18), I suggest he consider “O Brother, Where Art Thou?� Loosely based on Homer’s “The Odyssey,� this film offers numerous themes worthy of student exploration. It is erudite, witty and provocative.

I think the Coen brothers have produced an excellent work that would fit well in any classroom.
