Last Year

Canadian Paul Tracy roared back from his 17th starting position to win. Driving a Team KOOL Green Honda/Reynard, the 31-year-old took the lead from surprisingly competitive rookie Takuya Kurosawa on lap 62 and led to the checkered flag. It was Tracy’s 16th championship car victory, and came at the same circuit at which he logged his first in 1993. Tracy finished 3.191 seconds ahead of Helio Castroneves, who held off Jimmy Vasser after a series of late-race challenges. Vasser’s third-place finish in Chip Ganassi’s Toyota-powered Lola was Toyota’s best finish in championship car racing.
