Frazeur Eligible to Run for Diablos

Mission Viejo High junior David Frazeur, who is among the county leaders in the 110 high hurdles and the triple jump, has apparently won his battle for eligibility with the California Interscholastic Federation.

Frazeur’s appeal of a decision by Southern Section Commissioner James Staunton was heard last week by a section appeals officer, who ruled that Frazeur can remain eligible in track and field provided escrow closes on the family’s home by Friday, as is expected.

“He was approved based on residential issues,†said Staunton, who had denied Frazeur’s original eligibility request, which was based on claims of hardship.

Frazeur, who played quarterback at Capistrano Valley, transferred to Mission Viejo after his testimony in a criminal case, which he said resulted in threats and harassment at school.

Staunton said the family turned down an offer to attend another of the Capistrano Unified School District’s three high schools, and instead exercised a choice that did not “constitute a need to grant immediate varsity eligibility.â€

“I ruled on the condition of hardship, which I didn’t see proven,†Staunton said. “I believe the hearing officer supported that part of it, but granted eligibility immediately under circumstances that escrow close properly. That’s what his attorney argued.â€
