Victor Leite rushed 13 times for 70 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to help host Century High defeat Bolsa Grande, 33-20, Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
The Centurions (1-0) used a suffocating defense to limit Bolsa Grande’s wing-T offense to fewer than50 yards in the first half.
Century opened the scoring after recovering a botched punt attempt by Bolsa Grande. Leite responded on the ensuing play, banging his way into the end zone to put his team ahead, 7-0.
After Century increased its lead to 14-0, Bolsa Grande scored with just five seconds left in the second quarter, when quarterback Alex Guadarrama hit running back Paul Bui on a fade pattern from 15 yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7.
Guadarrama was under constant pressure and getting hit hard on just about every pass attempt. He left the game in the fourth quarter after being blind-sided by linebacker Will Lockington.
Defense made the difference for the young Centurions.
‘It was nice to see our defense step it up and deliver hard hits,” said Century Coach Marty Albert. “In order to compete in our league, we’d better be physical.”
Defensive back Frederick Medina capped the scoring by intercepting a Guadarrama pass and returning it 99 yards for a touchdown and a 33-7 lead.
