2. VIRGINIA TECH (7-0) defeated Syracuse, 22-14. Michael Vick for the Heisman Trophy, you say? He totaled nine yards rushing and 76 yards passing against Orangemen. Next: Pittsburgh, Saturday
3. OKLAHOMA (6-0) did not play. Sooners’ ranking is their highest since 1988 and they have back-to-back victories against Top 10 teams for the first time since 1987. Next: Nebraska, Saturday
4. MIAMI (5-1) defeated Temple, 45-17. Owls didn’t catch Hurricanes sleeping, but they ended quarterback Ken Dorsey’s streak of passes without an interception at 193. Next: Louisiana Tech, Saturday
5. CLEMSON (8-0) defeated North Carolina, 38-24. Woody Danzler had nothing to do with this. He left because of a bruised left ankle and the Tigers trailing, 17-0. Next: Georgia Tech, Saturday
6. FLORIDA STATE (7-1) defeated Virginia, 37-3. Seminoles extended the nation’s longest home-field unbeaten streak to 50 games, including 33 consecutive wins. Next: at North Carolina State, Saturday
7. OREGON (6-1) defeated No. 21 Arizona, 14-10. High-flying Ducks have won 19 in a row at Autzen Stadium and 12 in a row at home against Pac-10 opponents. Next: at Arizona State, Saturday

13. MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-2) lost to Louisiana State, 45-38 (OT). Even with Dicenzo Miller in the lineup, the Bulldogs lost their second consecutive road game. Next: Middle Tennessee State, Saturday
14. OHIO STATE (6-1) defeated Iowa, 38-10. Buckeyes won easily, but had nearly as many yards in penalties (11 for 104 yards) as rushing (33 for 108). Next: at No. 17 Purdue, Saturday
15. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI (5-1) did not play. The Golden Eagles, winners of 13 consecutive Conference USA games and five in a row overall, have five defensive touchdowns. Next: at Houston, Saturday

19. OREGON STATE (6-1) defeated No. 23 UCLA, 44-38. In past two games against Bruins, the Beavers have scored 99 points and totaled 1,163 yards. Next: Washington State, Saturday
20. NOTRE DAME (5-2) defeated West Virginia, 42-28. Fighting Irish may have lost quarterback Arnaz Battle for the season, but they have yet to lose a fumble. Next: Air Force, Saturday
21. ARIZONA (5-2) lost to No. 7 Oregon, 14-10. Dick Tomey, in his 14th season as Wildcat coach, is 0-5 at Autzen Stadium. Three of Arizona’s final four games are at home. Next: No. 23 UCLA, Saturday
22. MINNESOTA (5-3) lost to Indiana, 51-43. That was some hangover the Gophers had from the Ohio State victory, as the Hoosiers rolled to a season high in points. Next: No. 25 Northwestern, Saturday
23. UCLA (4-3) lost to No. 19 Oregon State, 44-38. Even the return of DeShaun Foster couldn’t help Bruins, who suffered only their third loss in last 21 at Rose Bowl. Next: at No. 21 Arizona, Saturday
24. NORTH CAROLINA STATE (5-1) did not play. Wolfpack entry into top 25--only the eighth time it has been ranked since 1995--could be short-lived. Next: No. 6 Florida State, Saturday
