More Bodies Found as Po Bursts Banks

Landslides that swept away homes in Italy’s Alps yielded the bodies of relatives who died together and claimed another victim when cleanup efforts set off a new slide. Downstream, the flood-swollen Po River hit historic highs as it surged past evacuated settlements in the northern plains on its way to the Adriatic. At the old Lombard farm center of Cremona, the Po burst its banks, flooding vacant homes. The daily uncovering of bodies in the Alps brought the death toll to 31, with 23 in northern Italy and eight in southern Switzerland.
