Four Orange County curricular programs are among 46 across California that will be honored Saturday by the California School Boards Assn.

The Saddleback Valley Unified School District is the county’s big winner and will take home two Golden Bell Awards from the annual statewide meeting of school board members, scheduled this weekend in Long Beach.

Although the honored schools will not receive money, they do receive adulation from school board members across the state, as well as a plaque, said Stephanie Farland, education coordinator for CSBA.

“This rings our bells,†quipped Saddleback Valley Supt. Peter A. Hartman. He said his district’s honored programs--the Summer Reading program and the Language Arts Assistance program--are efforts to improve students’ reading.

The Summer Reading program, organized by a board member a few years ago, encourages students to read for pleasure over the summer. The Language Arts Assistance program places struggling students with aides who can give them one-on-one help.

Other Orange County winners in the 21st annual Golden Bell awards are Huntington Beach Union High School for its Week of Welcome program and Fullerton Union High School for its Culinary Arts Academy.
