* David Hermelin; Arranged Clinton Visit as U.S. Envoy to Norway

David Hermelin, 63, recent ambassador to Norway who persuaded President Clinton to become the first sitting U.S. chief of state to visit that nation. Clinton named Hermelin ambassador in 1997, and two years later Hermelin arranged Clinton’s official visit to the Scandinavian country. He retired last January. For his service in Norway, Hermelin received the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit Grand Cross, the nation’s highest civilian award. A Michigan entrepreneur and tireless fund-raiser and volunteer, Hermelin was a partner in the Palace of Auburn Hills, as well as a real estate developer and venture capital investor. He threw lavish fund-raising parties for charities and presidential candidates. He served as international chairman of the State of Israel Bonds campaign, served on the board of the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, and worked with the United Jewish Appeal, the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit, Detroit Round Table of Christians and Jews, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Michigan Opera Theatre, the University of Michigan, Hebrew University, the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Weizmann Institute in Israel.
