By anyone’s standards it was a fine performance. By Van Nuys’ standards, it was an offensive avalanche.
The Wolves defeated Reseda, 40-21, by rushing for 340 yards and scoring 23 more points than they had in any other game. Van Nuys had scored only 82 points in nine previous games.
The victory was the second in a row after eight losses for the Wolves, who defeated Monroe, 7-0. The modest streak vaulted them into the City Invitational playoffs, a wholly unexpected development.
Against Reseda, Eddie Kirakosian rushed for 244 yards. He will be needed in the playoff opener against Roosevelt (7-3) because Van Nuys has had little success through the air.
The Wolves have not thrown a touchdown pass all season and two quarterbacks have combined to complete 50 of 128 passes.
The running game, however, is heating up. In addition to Kirakosian, who has 731 yards, quarterback Abel Pulido is a dangerous runner. Pulido rushed for three touchdowns against Reseda.
