After 63 Years, Former Sailor Moves Out of His S.F. Hotel Room

SAN FRANCISCO — An 81-year-old former sailor has moved after living for about 63 years in the same room of a San Francisco hotel.
Orlan Lattimer said he grew tired of sharing a refrigerator and bathroom with other residents at the Arlington Hotel. So, he got on the the city Housing Authority’s waiting list for a room in one of its buildings for seniors.
As far as Lattimer can remember, he moved into the hotel in 1937, when rooms were 50 cents a night.
He said he made his first request for a new place 12 years ago, but the Housing Authority maintains that it came last September.
Last week, Lattimer moved into a studio apartment a block away, complete with its own kitchen and bathroom.
He doesn’t plan another move.
