SANTA FE SPRINGS — An intoxicated motorist drove through the front window of a Target store Monday, plowing into a checkout stand and injuring a female cashier, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 4:20 p.m. when Gustavo Ramirez, 45, drove through the parking lot of the store at 10621 Carmenita Road and hit a curb, police said.
“His vehicle continued forward into a palm tree, which bent over, breaking the windows out of the front of the store--and then acted as a ramp for the vehicle,” Whittier Police Sgt. David Hagopian said. “The Honda went through the front windows and came to rest on check stand No. 15.”
The employee working that check stand was knocked to the ground, he said.
“Officers arrived at the scene and found the driver throwing cans of beer out of the vehicle,” Hagopian said. Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving.
The 56-year-old employee was hospitalized at Presbyterian Hospital.
