A small fire was started on a 20-foot yacht at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach after lines the owner had burned to prevent fraying reignited after he left, authorities said.
A club employee saw the flames and put them out with a garden hose, Sheriff’s Sgt. Karl Von Voight said.
“The boat was in between two other boats and near the building in a storage area,” Von Voight said. “It could have done a lot of damage.”
