Esperanza Survives Five-Game Battle With Oxnard
Kristy Chester had 15 kills, including six in the fifth game, as Esperanza defeated Oxnard in the Southern Section Division I-AA girls’ volleyball quarterfinals Saturday at Esperanza.
Sarah Engle, who played sparingly because of a twisted ankle, had 10 kills and five blocks and Stacy Knisely had 22 assists for the fourth-seeded Aztecs (14-5), who won, 15-8, 9-15, 15-10, 12-15, 15-12, and will face top-seeded Long Beach Poly Tuesday.
In other Division I-AA matches:
Long Beach Poly 3, El Toro 2--Katherine Varin had 22 kills and Krista Kimble had seven blocks for host El Toro (15-5), which fought valiantly before losing to the top-seeded Jackrabbits, 18-16, 4-15, 15-8, 9-15, 15-5.
San Clemente 3, Los Alamitos 0--After shutting out the Griffins (15-9) in the first game, the second-seeded Tritons (23-1) won, 15-8, 15-6, and advanced to play Upland Tuesday. Junior Lauren Boissevain had 37 assists, two aces and five kills and Katy Daly had 11 kills.
