Re “The Release of Rand Reports Is Independent of Politics,” Commentary, Nov. 1: There we have it--in black and white! Rand reports that “the most powerful factors in predicting student performance are family characteristics.” Yet The Times, among others, would base teachers’ salaries on student performance. In other words, their very livelihoods would depend largely on “family characteristics” over which they have no control.
Is it any wonder that over 50% of all new teachers leave the profession within the first five years, and our nation will soon have to replace 2.3 million to 2.7 million teachers?
