Projects Planned for Mitzvah Day
An array of community projects awaits the 5,000 volunteers expected to participate Sunday in Mitzvah Day 2000.
One contingent, organized by the North Valley Jewish Community Center, will spruce up Rinaldi Street between Sepulveda and Balboa boulevards. About 100 volunteers of all ages are expected to help with weeding, painting light poles and removing graffiti.
“We felt we wanted to give back to the community,†said Elaine Wynstock, program director for the community center, the site of a shooting attack last year. “Everybody has been so good to us.â€
More than 100 projects are planned, involving more than 30 synagogues and organizations. A group of teenagers and adults at Temple Ahavat Shalom in Northridge is decorating caps for children with cancer or AIDS, and a “trike-a-thon†will be held at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino to raise money for the Beit Issie Shapiro Institute in Israel and for programs involving local children with developmental disabilities.
Other participants will join the CROP Hunger Walk starting at 1:30 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Hollywood, and still others will work on Habitat for Humanity projects in Pacoima, Lancaster and Piru.
