Fresh off an appearance at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, veteran saxophonist David “Fathead†Newman is in town for a multi-night run--and he’s got some impressive accompaniment in the way of trombonist Slide Hampton.

Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an Aaron Copland program this weekend, noting what would have been the late composer’s 100th birthday (Nov. 14, 1900). With veteran mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne singing some of the “Old American Songs,†the program also offers a sampling of Copland’s music for films, the revised Symphony Ode (1955) and the Suite from “Appalachian Spring.â€

The Silent Movie Theatre and proprietor Charlie Lustman celebrate the one-year anniversary of the venue’s grand reopening with one of the genre’s staples, Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times.†Chaplin’s last silent film, made in 1936, takes on the age of mechanization while slyly satirizing some of the day’s social issues.
