NRA Gun Club

* In reading about the NRA’s idea of a really fun gun social club in the heart of Times Square (May 20) we recalled a Victor Talking Machine record by Will Rogers made in 1921. The title: “Timely Topics.”
“Never a day passes in New York without some innocent bystander getting shot. You just stand around this town long enough, and be innocent, and somebody’s gonna shoot you. One day there were four shot. That’s the best shooting ever done in this town. Hard to find four innocent people in New York . . . even if you don’t stop to shoot them. That’s why policemen never have to aim here. They just shoot up the street anywhere, whoever he hits, he’s the right one.”
As W.C. Fields once said: “Ah, those were the days. I hope they never come again!”
