Chaminade Wins 3rd Fencing Title

Chaminade High won its third consecutive state fencing championship last weekend at the All-California Fencing championships in San Francisco.
Derek Snyder, a two-time national champion in his age group, won the gold medal in men’s foil.
Teammates Vinnie Carbone, Chris Smith and Chris Gummeson finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Snyder, a junior, won three Pacific Coast fencing events in the last two months. He finished 36th in the world competing for the U.S. Junior Cadet team.
BASKETBALL
* Kent Dennis, former Cleveland High guard, is transferring from West Virginia to Loyola Marymount.
BASEBALL
* Jay Caligiuri, a sophomore third baseman at Cal State Los Angeles, has received honorable mention on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. team.
Caligiuri, from Camarillo High, batted a team-high .374. He had 10 home runs, 19 doubles and a .643 slugging percentage.
FOOTBALL
* Keith Smith, 1993 Times Ventura County Back of the Year and 1994 Times Ventura County athlete of the year who helped Newbury Park win the Southern Section Division III title, signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
Smith, who played one year of professional baseball, passed for 5,972 yards at Arizona, third-highest in school history.
SOCCER
* Robert Ciccone has been hired as boys’ coach at Hart High.
He was an assistant with the team last season.
