Chinese Student’s Slaying Triggers Protests

BEIJING — In a rare act of defiance, Beijing University students demanded the resignation of two top police officials and marched in protest for a second day Wednesday over the slaying of a student.
On Wednesday, as many as 500 students gathered to demand a meeting with school officials.
The students were also seeking a memorial service for slain student Qiu Qingfeng. Qiu, a freshman, was returning to her dormitory at a branch campus late Friday when she was raped and killed, said university public relations officials who requested anonymity.
On Wednesday, the students won a concession: University President Xu Zhihong announced that a memorial service will be held today.
He said the school had asked police to investigate Qiu’s killing.
The demands snowballed, however. Posters called for China’s public security minister and Beijing’s police chief to resign and accused the government of negligence.
